Local people invited to view Extra Care retirement homes plan for Chichester

A public exhibition will give local residents the opportunity to view and comment on McCarthy and Stone’s proposal to develop land on the corner of Palmers Field Avenue, Chichester, which forms part of Graylingwell Park, with Retirement Living Plus (Extra Care) accommodation.

McCarthy and Stone’s plans are still at a preliminary stage and no planning application has been submitted. Around 2,000 local residents, businesses and stakeholders have been invited to the public exhibition, including councillors, members of residents’ associations and immediate neighbours. The public exhibition will be held:

On: Tuesday 3rd July 2018

At: The Linden Homes Sales & Marketing Suite, Connolly Way, Chichester, PO19 6PQ

Between: 3.30pm – 7pm

The site was outlined for a care home as part of Linden Homes’ wider application for the former Graylingwell Hospital site. McCarthy and Stone has since acquired an interest in the site and is proposing its development with a scheme of 60 one- and two- bedroom Extra Care apartments specifically designed to meet the needs of people in later life, together with attractive landscaped gardens and on-site car parking spaces.

The redevelopment of the site in Chichester offers an important opportunity to provide much-needed specialist Extra Care retirement accommodation in a sustainable location, increasing the housing choice for local older people. Chichester District Council’s Demographic Projections document predicts that the local over-60s population will rise by 43% up to 2031. It is important the needs of older people are not overlooked. Purpose-built accommodation better meets the needs of older people, delaying the need for residential care.

Martin Brown, Development Director at McCarthy and Stone, said: “We want to hear from the local community and our future homeowners before we finalise our planning application. We will be displaying our plans at a public exhibition where our project team will be on hand to answer questions and listen to feedback on what we have done so far.”

McCarthy and Stone’s Extra Care accommodation enables older homeowners to live independent, healthy and active lives in their own home with flexible care and support available on-site 24 hours a day. Many homeowners of Extra Care accommodation are typically looking to ease the burden of maintaining a larger family property, which releases existing houses back into the market for families.

Estate management, care and support is provided by McCarthy and Stone through YourLife Management Services, which is registered with the Care Quality Commission. This is a partnership with Somerset Care Group, a not-for-profit care provider. The development would be over-seen by a fully-registered Estate Manager, with staff based on-site 24 hours a day, and domestic assistance and personal care packages are provided upon need.

The apartments will feature walk-in wardrobes and fully fitted kitchens with integrated appliances.  Homeowners will also be able to enjoy the beautifully landscaped gardens, with seating areas perfect for enjoying an early morning coffee. Each development includes a guest suite, homeowners’ lounge and Bistro restaurant, ideal for socialising with friends and visiting family.

McCarthy and Stone schemes champion social activities to encourage a rich, active lifestyle and foster companionship among homeowners. In a 12-month period alone, 27,600 social events were held in its managed properties across the country. Homeowners are free to join in as much or as little as they like, but many benefit from this active social calendar. Peter Peursum, homeowner at a Retirement Living Plus (Extra Care) scheme in Southsea talks about his experience:

“The staff and homeowners at the development are all wonderful and we enjoy being part of an active community. We like to get involved in as many activities as possible, including gala evenings, the Valentine’s Day tea dance and weekly organised walks to the pier.”
